Alajuela, June 12, 2024. Medical device company Theragenics will create 500 new job positions over the next five years, as part of a US$10 million investment in its new manufacturing plant in Costa Rica. In this new plant, it will be possible to manufacture specialized medical needles, guide wires and other components for minimally invasive medical devices.
The construction of the internal upgrade for the new 4,000m² facility at Coyol Free Zone started in April 2024. The plant, which includes a 2,000 m² production area and a 1,000 m² clean room built in accordance with Class 8 standards, is expected to be operating at its full capacity in the second quarter of 2025.
The new facilities will include cutting-edge equipment and technologies. Manufacturing high-precision components for major medical devices will be possible.
Christian Segura, Theragenics General Manager in Costa Rica stated that the work to open the new plant is progressing as planned. “This is an exciting moment for Theragenics, since we have expanded our operations in Latin America, but it is also a key moment for Costa Rica, as it will be the first medical needle manufacturing plant in the country”, Segura said.
Special high-precision medical needles are crucial components for many minimally invasive medical devices. In fact, needles are becoming more important as medical devices become smaller and more complex.
“This makes needles a rapidly growing market in the medical device industry. The new Theragenics facilities we are building in Costa Rica will be at the forefront of global needle production and supply”, added General Manager Segura.
Mark Pugh, CEO of Theragenics, embraced the start of the construction of the internal upgrade and celebrated the expansion of the Theragenics team in Costa Rica.
“When we were looking for the location of our new manufacturing facility, Costa Rica was the obvious choice because of its fantastic capabilities and its established infrastructure. We will be at the center of Costa Rica’s thriving medical device industry, since our new facilities are in Coyol Free Zone”, Mark added.
“At Theragenics, we have a strong track record and reputation in the industry for designing and manufacturing high-quality minimally invasive medical device components and products for a wide range of customers, from the largest life sciences organizations in the world to original equipment manufacturers and health care customers”, Pugh said.
“Also, we are an ambitious and innovative company that continually expands its boundaries, developing solutions that exceed our customers’ expectations. Our new manufacturing facility in Costa Rica is key to our growth strategy, and I am looking forward to working with a team that is growing”, Pugh finished.
Carlos Wong, general director of CODE Development Group, a company that is a co-developer of Coyol Free Zone, was pleased by the trust of Theragenics to develop its expansion project in the industrial park that, with 17 years of operation, stands out as the leading free zone in exports of medical devices in Costa Rica.
“We are constantly innovating to offer ideal conditions to companies, so they can operate successfully in Costa Rica. Theragenics began operations in Coyol Free Zone in 2014 and reinvestments such as the one it is making now, 10 years later, mean a great opportunity for the country’s competitiveness, as well as for the generation of quality employment”, claimed Wong.
“We are pleased with the announcement by the company Theragenics, a leader in medical devices, about its investment and the creation of 500 new jobs in the upcoming years. This project contributes to the economic growth of the country and provides high-quality employment opportunities, promoting the professional development and specialization of Costa Rican human talent. In addition, the growth of Theragenics reflects the trust that multinational companies have in our country, as well as Costa Rica’s commitment to attracting high-value investments and strengthening our advanced manufacturing ecosystem”, added Laura López, PROCOMER General Manager.
The opening of the new Theragenics facility will create 500 new high-quality jobs over the next five years in the Coyol Free Zone. Recruitment for the different positions will start immediately.
Christian Segura stated that “the new roles we are creating at Theragenics Costa Rica are an excellent opportunity for experienced professionals in the medical device industry to advance their careers.”
“My piece of advice to anyone in the industry is to check out the vacant positions we are currently offering and to keep checking back regularly, as we are constantly hiring. Your current knowledge will be transferable, and you will learn new ones that will expand your knowledge and your experience,” assured Segura.
“You will also work in a modern production environment manufacturing cutting-edge products that make a big difference in operating rooms, catheterization suites and similar surgical facilities around the world.”
“Moreover, with the company’s ambitious growth plans, there are interesting opportunities that will take your career to the next level,” said the Theragenics General Manager in Costa Rica.
