Everything is changing. The way we eat, the technology, people’s expectations – the ripple effect of this is revolutionizing much of the food industry, from the ingredients we buy to the food manufacturing software that is used. Given the above, the following consumption trends in the food industry are presented for 2021:
1 Consumers desire to better understand where their food comes from: While tracing the origin of a food source and displaying transparent information about its manufacturing process has certainly grown in recent years, there is no doubt that the pandemic has accelerated demand in the food industry.
2. Foods that can help strengthen immune system: The increase in the blurring of products, between what was traditionally considered a supplement to a normal diet and becoming a norm in supermarket aisles.
3. Ingredients that promote gut health and super foods: Ginger and turmeric are being added to more products as brands see an opportunity to prosper from a surge in interest in foods and beverages that contain health benefits. With an estimation that 75% of the world’s population is planning to eat and drink healthier because of Covid-19, that’s one ‘bandwagon’ that needs to be jumped on
4. The rise of plant-based foods: Health benefits are considered the main driver of this change, the variety of foods and concerns for animal welfare largely stand out. Experts predict continued success for old and new plant-based brands, they also expect new ingredients to come in, unlike the pea, soy and wheat protein that currently dominate the market.
5. Food processing: The way food is processed will also face certain challenges, even before it reaches the plate. Transparency in the manufacturing process and also a more informed consumer has encouraged companies to implement technology in their processes and thus guarantee quality and food safety.
Consumers are increasingly taking control of the food they want, leaving manufacturers with little choice but to give in to new demand and global market trends.
