San Jose, January 10, 2024. EcoCups, a Peruvian company specializing in the manufacturing of eco-friendly packaging, has announced its decision to establish a production plant in La Ceiba in Orotina, Costa Rica. This initiative is expected to create employment opportunities for 100 individuals within the first year of operation, contributing to the growth and development of the region outside the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM).
The announcement of this approximately $5 million investment was made this morning in Orotina, with the presence of top executives from EcoCups, the Minister of Foreign Trade, Manuel Tovar, the General Manager of the Costa Rican Foreign Trade Promotion Office (PROCOMER), Laura López, and municipal authorities.
Founded in 2016, EcoCups specializes in the production of cardboard packaging and customized packaging for the food industry, with its primary markets being the United States, Central America, and South America.
“Eco Cups International, ECISA, is a company with many years of experience in the food packaging industry, which has recently established itself in Costa Rica. In recent years, we have focused on developing packaging solutions for food products, cups, plates, and wraps that help reduce the use of single-use plastic and, consequently, the impact of their use and disposal on the planet. Costa Rica, a country aligned with initiatives to preserve nature, has embraced our ideals to offer truly biodegradable products without the intervention of chemicals or additional processes.” stated Karel Hartinger, CEO of EcoCups.
Hartinger added, “We genuinely care about the consequences our consumption and habits may have on the planet. We are Eco Cups International, a globally focused company, committed to providing the best to achieve a higher quality of life and preserve our planet.”
“One of the priorities of this government and the Foreign Direct Investment policy, led by COMEX and PROCOMER, is to attract companies to regions outside the GAM, especially to areas in greatest need. That is why today, we are pleased to announce more investment: specifically, the arrival of EcoCups in Orotina, a region with immense potential that we are confident will benefit greatly from the opportunities that lie ahead with this company,” stated Manuel Tovar, Minister of Foreign Trade.
Laura López, General Manager of PROCOMER, added, “We continue working to ensure that the benefits of foreign direct investment reach all regions of the country. For this reason, we celebrate EcoCups’ decision to establish its operations in a region outside the Greater Metropolitan Area, such as Orotina. We hope that, hand in hand with this and other companies, more employment and development opportunities will be facilitated for the residents of the area. And to EcoCups, we wish them much success and reiterate PROCOMER’s commitment to continue working together in each of the following phases of their operation.”
In 2023, the country managed to double foreign direct investment outside the GAM. Last year, out of the 56 new investment projects established in the country, 12 chose to locate themselves outside the GAM, significantly surpassing the historical average of 6 projects annually recorded in recent years.
In this initial phase, which commences operations upon the announcement, the EcoCups plant covers approximately 4,100 square meters. It is anticipated that by 2025, a second phase of the project will come into operation, reaching a total of 18,000 square meters.
